The ProjectAs part of Alexander Snijders' MEng in Mechanical Engineering & Management at The University of Edinburgh, he is writing his thesis on modularity. Specifically, the thesis involves a critical review of the literature concerning modularity, in an attempt to identify and explore the limits to both technological and organizational modularity. This work is being conducted under the supervision of Dr Luciana D'Adderio.
Modularity is an incredibly powerful concept, which has changed the way firms design and manufacture products. By designing systems such that they can be broken down into modules with defined interfaces, companies are able to increase their adaption capabilities in the face of environmental change, reduce design and production costs, increase product variety, and power innovation through in-depth component learning.
